Rankings: NYC, a Global City of the Future

FDI Magazine released their biennial rankings of Global Cities of the Future. For 2018-2019, NYC was ranked #7 overall and #3 overall in megacities, achieving high marks in human capital, business friendliness, and economic potential (link). NYC’s digital sector was ranked #4 overall, and is currently growing three times faster than the tech sectors in other US cities (link). We are proud of these awards and grateful to partners like you that help make the city economically strong and globally friendly. 

 

Website: Amazon Headquarters in Long Island City, Queens

As you know, last month Amazon officially announced that it will establish its new headquarters in Long Island City, creating 25,000 good-paying jobs over 10 years, rising to 40,000 over 15 years. The city recently launched a website, www.HQ2.nyc in order to better familiarize the public with New York City’s HQ2 bid and to keep people informed on the next steps. The website features the complete proposal that New York State and City submitted to Amazon.

 

Survey: Startup Genome, December 31

Startup Genome is conducting a survey (link) to update its research on startup ecosystems and we would like your help promoting the survey to your networks of NYC-based startup founders. In the 2018 report (link), NYC was ranked the second highest performing ecosystem in the world. The survey will bring global visibility to the incredible momentum our city is experiencing and will help us identify our startup ecosystem’s strengths and opportunities for improvement. The survey is confidential and should take 15 minutes to complete. It will close on December 31, 2018.

 

OPPORTUNITY: NYC Open Data Week, January 4

NYC Open Data and BetaNYC are calling for participation and session idea submissions (link) for Open Data Week 2019. Taking place during the first week of March, this series celebrates the city’s Open Data Law and raises awareness of the city’s free resource, NYC Open Data.

 

OPPORTUNITY: IN2NYC, February 1

NYCEDC opened applications for the fourth (and likely final) round of International Innovators Initiative (link), a program that creates a pathway for international entrepreneurs to build their businesses in New York City. IN2NYC facilitates collaborations between partners schools (CUNY institutions and NYU) to further their institutional missions, while enabling entrepreneurs to qualify for cap-exempt H-1B visas. Selected entrepreneurs will use their expertise to contribute to school communities and programs, while building their businesses in campus incubators.

 

OPPORTUNITY: NYCx Moonshot Challenge, February 8

NYCEDC, alongside the Mayor’s Office of Chief Technology Officer and NYC Cyber Command, launched the Cybersecurity Moonshot Challenge (link) that calls on industry experts to develop new, affordable, and scalable solutions to protect New York City-based small and midsize business from the dangers of cyberattacks. Entrepreneurs, technologists, researchers, and community members from around the world are encouraged to submit their solution to be considered for several prizes, including a cash prize, a $1 million equity investment, acceptance into NYCEDC’s Cyber Accelerator, and market entry packages to a number of international cybersecurity hubs.

 

OPPORTUNITY: Life Sciences R&D, February 15

NYCEDC released an RFP (link) seeking proposals from organizations to develop and operate critical facilities and/or equipment to support commercialization of life sciences R&D activity in the field of therapeutics. Respondents from outside of the United States are encouraged to apply.

 

OPPORTUNITY: Made in New York Campus – Bush Terminal Studios, February 28

NYCEDC released an RFP (link) seeking proposals from film, TV, sound-recording, and other media production companies and/or industrial developers with a strong track record of successful development in major metropolitan centers to lease and develop a portion of the Made in New York Campus at Bush Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This RFP is an exciting opportunity to develop nearly 200,000 SF of waterfront real estate into a best-in-class production facility campus for film and television production, video and photo shoots, sound-recording, and emerging media sectors such as AR/VR.
