Member news | April 21, 2020
Meet Sarah Zambuto, Branch Manager at Adecco, a leader among staffing and temp agencies in New York City that delivers office support and professional talent for brands and agencies.
Keep reading to learn from Sarah's expertise in recruiting and her outlook on the current staffing landscape, and what her advice is for those currently looking for jobs in New York City.
FACC: Can you help us understand the staffing landscape in 2020 and do you foresee it changing due to the current COVID-19 context?
SZ: Yes, the staffing landscape is going to drastically change due to the COVID-19 impact. First, we will be going from the tightest labor market with unemployment only being about 2% to one where it will likely be 30%. This means that it will go from a candidate-driven market to an employer-driven market, which it has not been for many years.
FACC: Do you have any advice for those in our network currently looking for a job in New York City?
SZ: Yes, my advice is to really get to know your network and be prepared for a very competitive market. I also believe that more of the roles when we get on the other side of COVID-19 will be temporary or temp to hire as companies get their footing in the new market. I highly recommend connecting with recruiters as firms like Adecco have solid relationships with clients and can open doors for you vs the black hole that applying online can feel like.
FACC: Based on your professional experiences, what has become your top priority as a branch manager?
SZ: My top priorities are ensuring our clients have the staff they need to keep running-whether that is the remote or onsite staff. My second priority is to build new relationships with new customers who have essential businesses. My third priority is to be available for our clients and candidates who have many questions as we navigate these unchartered waters.
FACC: In your opinion, what are a couple of the most important best practices in management?
SZ: Keep your team confident and engaged, keep your clients happy, and Stay positive!
FACC: If you are able to share, explain a time when you had to make a difficult managerial decision?
SZ: I have been a manager at several companies over the years. The hardest thing for me as a manager is having to make the hard decision to let someone go. Prior to separation, I always made sure that there was a clear conversation around company expectations and where they were not aligning. It’s never an easy conversation but in the end, the employee usually felt the same way that the job was in fact not the right fit.
FACC: What propelled you to join the FACC-NY network?
SZ: I was a member of the FACC before when I was with another staffing firm. I always found the FACC events to be top-notch and I was excited to join again. I am really glad the FACC is hosting online events in lieu of in-person events during this time.
